My Family and Other Animals

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

So just before Christmas I saw this book on the book shelf and was drawn to its image and the story. But I couldn't justify spending money on a book - I already have too many!!

Every time I go into Kmart or Big W I gravitate towards the book section and this book kept pulling me back. Buy it said my daughter!! You keep picking it up.

So, my sister gave me a gift of money at Christmas and I decided to splurge it all on some books, one of them being.......The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman.

Well I started this book and thought "Wow, this is heavy." The subject matter and the way it has been written felt very condensed. Reading one page took forever, it has been very slow going.

Now that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it, because I did, very much so. It was just exhausting to read. Emotionally and also because the content or subject matter was so new to me. I don't mind telling you that I am totally ignorant when it comes to the bible or any religious information. Its just not my thing, it doesn't interest me as a general subject. BUT when entwined within a compelling story like this.....

So I finished it last night and I thought about the story so much that I couldn't get to sleep. I thought about it again today, to the point that I couldn't become interested in another book just yet.

I recommend this book, just make sure you open the cover knowing that it is not a quick read. It is extremely interesting, compellingly so. The characters are strong women, with stories to tell.
