My Family and Other Animals

John Robert Byrne - 23rd April 1971 - 1st February 2019

On the 1st February 2019 at approx 6am the Police attended his home, to advise that John had been left with life threatening injuries after a motorcycle accident. He was transported to Joondalup Hospital, but did not survive. He was only 47 years old and left behind a grieving family. He was a father, son, partner and grand father.

He had spent the previous day having an impromptu lunch with two of his daughters. Played indoor cricket with his brother in the afternoon/early evening with food and two beers. He was offered a bed, but chose to ride home leaving just after midnight.

Approx 2 hours later a fellow traveler exiting the freeway ramp noticed the motor bike and came back to investigate. They found John and called an Ambulance possibly applied some first aid? at the scene.

He had only his work ID on him, so the WA Police were called by the hospital staff, and they subsequently visited his home to speak to his partner who has called his father.

So many questions arise, but possibly no answer will satisfy, other than wishing that the events could be wound back and John to be alive and continuing his life.

On Tuesday the 12th February 2019 at 2pm, in the West Chapel at Pinnaroo Valley Cemetery we said our goodbyes. Lots of tears, some smiles at memories and a few bits of laughter. A beautiful eulogy was read by his stepfather John, with his daughter Amy, mother Susan and partner Julie telling stories of his deeds and their enduring love for him.

The chapel was full with so many attending to pay their respects that they flowed outside of the chapel. Maybe 200 or 300 attended. Family, friends and work colleagues.

John was my big little cousin. First cousins with our fathers being brothers. He was the oldest of five (5) siblings- Susan, Bruce, Rebecca and Rachel. He had 5 daughters - Jade, Amy, Kate, Charlotte and Daisy and was also grandfather to Jade's children. He was a beautiful person with a kind gentle soul. You could catch up after 12 months and continue the conversation as if you had only been talking 5 minutes before. He gave great hugs and when you talked to him, he made you feel as if you were important and as if what you were saying was the most interesting thing ever.

On the day that we lost him and the days since family and friends have left beautiful memories about him on his Facebook account with lots of photos being posted of him. No matter who you were, where you were on your journey of life and what you were doing.  If you happened to meet John, he left his large footprint on your heart.

A beautiful piece was printed in his community newspaper Joondalup Times and he posted a beautiful piece on his Linkdn account when he obtained his Degree from Curtin.

He was doing well at work as the Governance Coordinator at City of Joondalup; and had recently studied at Curtin University and in February 2018, he obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. Very proud moments and achievements.

We love you and will miss you so much Cousin John. xoxox
